No, they certainly can't stay there 'indefinitely.'
Unfortunately, that means that there WILL be a war against Iraq. If the US withdraws it troops without having done battle first, it will be some major PR for Iraq, and they will be the laughing stock of the Arab world. I don't think the US in general and Bush in particular could handle the humiliation.
