It's expensive, but an option would be a Palm Pilot with PalmReader or MobiPocket Software. I own a grayscale Palm m500 that has, but does not require use of, a backlight. The backlight on the m500 isn't that great, anyway.


You can read .pdb, .pdf, .doc and txt files on it with the right software. I think html files too, although I have never bothered with 'em. At this point I've probably downloaded over 1000 full-length novels from newsgroups to read. I prefer it to my local library, and the Palm's much less bulky in my briefcase than several hardcovers or paperbacks when I'm traveling.
