Hell, given the > enthusiasm with which the Bush regime is undermining the civil rights and > liberties of America's own citizens, they don't even seem to care about what > their own people think! While I am certainly opposed to actions by Ashcroft, this is a massive overstatement. There is a total of one American who is being held for secret reasons. That is, indeed, one too many and the ABA is right in opposing it. Given the fact that the US mainland was hit by a shadow enemy, and given the fact that we were very fortunate to not have 20,000 deaths (thank God that Al Quida tried to take down the WTC earlier), the excesses are not nearly as bad I feared on 9-12. Of course the Bush administration cares what the people in the US think; its up for reelection in < 2 years. And, every indication from the last election is that the public tends to favor the president's plan in Iraq. That's why only 1 Democrat up for re-election to the Senate opposed the Iraq war resolution. > > As for the "peace at any cost" US citizens, there aren't enough to make > > a difference (about 10% according to an article I read). > > I'd think that 10% of the US citizens is a force to be reckoned with -- 10% > of the population equals a hell of a lot of voters. Well, if they don't take to the streets with guerrilla warfare, they will just continue to be voted down 9 to 1. The US electoral system does not give overwhelming power to minuscule political parties. Dan M. _______________________________________________ http://www.mccmedia.com/mailman/listinfo/brin-l
