Former Reagan administration Secretary of State Alexander Haig predicted
Friday that the U.S. ground war with Iraq would be over in less than a day.

"The ground phase will take hours," Haig told nationally syndicated radio
host Sean Hannity, noting that his prediction didn't include the air war.

"[Saddam Hussein] is going to be gone probably before we get to the
outskirts of Baghdad, which we shouldn't enter and don't have to and never
did have to," Haig said.

The former NATO commander said that instead of conducting a bloody
house-to-house battle to root out Saddam's loyalists, U.S. ground troops
should blockade the city.

"All we have to do is surround it and starve it out," he told Hannity.

Haig said that before the ground troops land, the U.S. will unleash a "very,
very powerful" bombing campaign that will be far more devastating than the
one that began the first Gulf War.

Haig also predicted that "all this speculation about upheaval in the Middle
East (after the U.S. attacks) is going to dissipate rather than grow as a
result of the reestablishment of American credibility."
