What I remember from a BBC snippet was not so much
about the animals (cats & dogs) themselves, but the
way they were treated before being killed, which IIRC
involved boiling alive in some cases.  (Not that pigs
and cows and chickens here are treated particularly
kindly either - hence in my 'ideal worldlet,' the
animals I consume would be raised in a local co-op,
and killed humanely after living a brief but
comfortable life.)
