Heh, my father started growing his beard before he got married.

When I was 12, a friend of his from graduate school was in a very bad
accident and in the hospital more than an hour's drive away from his family,
unable to be moved to a closer hospital for a couple of weeks.  While he was
there, my parents visited him every evening (it was only 45 minutes away for
them).  Once he was recovered enough to go home, the whole family stopped by
his house to pay him a brief visit, and the first thing he said when he saw
me was, "You have your father's chin."

So after that, we had a decent idea as to what lay beneath.  (My mother knew
that, as well, but it's not something you'd notice as easily after spending
over 15 years with someone and 12 years watching a child grow up slowly.)
