The Stanley Brothers, like the majority of their contemporaries in the
bluegrass field at the time (Jim & Jesse, Jimmy Martin, Flatt & Scruggs, to
name a few) recorded a number songs with drums.

Syd Nathan, who ran King Records, did a number of things to "update" the
Stanley's sound, including the use of tape echo & other signal processing,
choice of material (including rock & roll songs like Hank Ballard's "Finger
Poppin' Time"), de-emphasizing (& eventually totally dispensing with) the
fiddle, & putting lead guitar out front.
