There's a menu button in the top right? I believe? Of the screen. That menu shows your inventory, among other things. You'll go there, find and tap the blanket, which puts it in your hand, and you can then use it. Being able to hold, and later combine, things is crucial to the story. Becoming familiar with that menu is pretty important.
