You are quite correct, thanks for saving me the time to write all of that up.

Karen's Replicator jobs are primarily based upon folders. You can identify a folder on your internal hard disk, like "My Documents", as the source. Then you would specify a folder on your external drive where to keep this replication. It is possible to limit or specific file types to backup, but the default is to replicate all files and folders in the source folder. If you keep data in other locations on your computer, just add another job. This may be settings for certain applications. I backup my JAWS settings, which includes all user scripts, every night.

Hi David. That's what I meant by replicator not being used to make an image. Like I said. I am mainly wanting to backup all of my files. So that I can both have them backed up and at the same time allow me to access them from the external hard drive when I get my new system running windows 7. So I am not really worried about any programs being backed up. So it sounds like replicator will do the job. But do I need to create a separate job for each file type I wish to backup? Or can I specify a single job to do all of that? As like I said. in my Google results. It stated that you can perform a complete disk backup.
Thanks again
Jason

First of all Karan's replicator is mainly for backing up your data files
which can be anything other than programs, but it mostly refers to emails,
word processor files and other such documents.

Second of all my tutorial for Image For Windows on the audio page does cover
backing up and restoring an entire hard drive and not just the data
partition. If I were to recover an entire data partition then Replicator
would be my program of choice. The system I did that second image for
windows tutorial didn't even have a data partition on it at the time of that
recording.

Karen's Replicator is suitable for backing up files and settings, not an
entire hard drive. To back up an entire hard drive, including the OS and
all programs so that you can restore it in the event of a catastrophic
failure, you need a disk imaging program like Image for Windows or Paragon Backup and Recovery. The problem with all imaging programs is that there is
no way to reliably perform the recovery procedure without sighted help
because there is no speech accompanying the boot CD, which all these
programs require. There is an audio tutorial on the JAWS Users audio page in which David describes how to create an image backup of a data partition
on a pair of DVD's using Image for Windows and then restore it without
speech, but I have not heard of anyone using this technique to successfully backup and restore an entire hard drive, which would potentially require a
lot more DVD's.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] how do you perform a drive backup using
Karen'sreplicator

Hi list. I want to start using Karen's replicator to perform backups of my
XP system onto an external hard drive. I have listened to David's
tutorials on how to use the program. But I also did a google search. As I wanted to get more information, as to what kind of things the program can backup? I originally thought. That you had to perform a separate job for each file type you wanted to backup? For example, one for documents, one
for emails etc. However, I read that it is possible to have Karen's
replicator to perform a complete disk backup. I am assuming that this
would not be an image backup. But would like to know. What would be
backupped? And how would you go about setting up a job that would result
in a complete hard drive backup?

This backing up process, is all new to me. So any opinions would be most
welcome.

Thanks Jason

P.S I am using Outlook express and Jaws 12. I am mainly wanting to backup all of my files. So that I can access them on my external hard drive, if my computer happens to die. I am planning on buying a system with windows
7 on ti soon. And so obviously, want to be able to access my backupped
files from the external hard drive using that new computer.
