Hi Jason,
It sounds like you installed the Windows Desktop Search.
It is supposed to index all of your files for fast searching,
but I have found it to be an annoyance and a resource hog.
My recommendation would be to uninstall it thru the add/remove programs applet in the control panel,
this will return the Windows search to it's default state.
HTH,
Rick Justice

Subject: [Blind-Computing] what is indexing and why has the windows searchfeature changed

Hi list,
about a month or so ago, I installed a windows update. Since then, I get this thing in the system trey saying "indexing complete". Or "indexing reduced due to user activity". What is this? And do I need to do anything with it? In addition, the same windows update. Seems to have changed the windows search layout when I press F3. I used to be presented with an edit field. So that I could enter search terms etc. I could then specify where to search e.g hard drive, desktop etc. However, now when I try to use the windows search feature? I don't get any of those choices. But rather various other ones such as: author and filename. And I only have the option to search the desktop only too.
Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks Jason
