Go to tools, options, and then settings.

Just keep in mind that you will always have to type in the whole
email address that way, no matter who you are sending too unless you
hit reply.

I thought it was a problem too, but I think what is happening is
that it's telling you it's using the autoselect feature when typing
in an email address. I think that's a choice in the context menu or
something. I had one computer that spoke that but the one I'm using
now doesn't. I've noticed that TBird works slightly differently
from one computer to the next.
