I am not sure exactly how your home network is configured. Are you saying
your cable modem is directly connected to your desktop computer? And the
wireless router is directly connected to the desktop computer as well? If
so, I would recommend that you get a wireless router that connects directly
to the cable modem. Many routers also have Ethernet ports as well to
connect a desktop computer or other devices close to the router. In this
configuration, the desktop does not need to be there and powered on at all
times. Most routers need or suggest that you use a PC directly connected to
set up and configure the router. But once set up, you do not need any
computers directly connected unless you are changing settings. I think I do
this less than once a year. I would be surprised if this is not how your
home network is actually configured.

Hello.
Okay, in my last post, I MENTIONED THAT MY WIFE AND I had bought new
laptops to replace our worn-out desktop, and to stop conflicts over
who uses the computer when. :) We have a router so we can both be
online with our computers, her Nintendo Wii, my Sprint Mogul
phone/PDA, and all that...But here's my issue. The router is of
course connected to the desktop. Now that we have the laptops, pretty
much the only thing the desktop is going to be used for is to support
the router because it has to be plugged into a computer, and neither
of us wants to have to have our laptops tyed down to the router...Make
sense?
So, is there a router available that will allow us both to access our
Comcast cable connection with our computers, my PDA/phone, her video
game console, without the need of the desktop computer to be connected
to? Though, come to theink of it, I guess our cable modem is
connected to the computer as well. Is there some solution, and how
much expense would I be looking at, so that we could set up our
wireless access, and be able to get rid of the desktop if we so
choose, but not have to dedicate one of our laptops to being
downstairs to be connected to the modem and the router?
Finally, in addition to the router and my cable modem, what would we
need to be able to set up an actual wireless network in the house so
that, in addition to sharing the internet connection, we could pass
files and such between our computers without USB cables and such?
