Thanks to Mac for keeping the count today. Weather: Bright blue skies with some very high thin cloud. Lots of aircraft contrails to use a reference points too. Winds were moderate to light from the NE then backing a bit to the N. Temps were cool starting at -3C and getting to a high of 4C. Raptor Observations: A pretty good flight today with a total of 346 raptors tallied. Lots of Redtails (258) and a few Red-shoulders (24) along with another small number of Golden Eagles (6) including one with a unique looking asymmetric under wing pattern (right wing more like sub-adult bird with very little white showing and left wing more juv/imm like with good sized patch of white showing). The official counter also spotted a low flying Gyrfalcon speeding over just above tree top height which is the first in a very long time at Hawk Cliff. Non-raptor Observations: A couple of good sized flocks of SACR including one with over 100 birds and all headed W just inland of the lake shore. Several CORA (7) which is likely a family group as there've been numerous sightings at this location of them going W and E at times. A young YBSA continued right in and around the viewing platform. Predictions: Lots of sunshine forecast for Thursday but crappy S to SE wind direction so the flight will likely be spread inland away from the hawk watch. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
