Glad they were able to get some good birds for the day! Thanks to Tom B and these visitors for helping get a count done today. Weather: Another cool weather day with pure blue skies and not a single cloud to be seen. Temps from 5C to a high of 11C. Winds were light from the E for the day. High pressure continues to dominate in the entire southern Ontario region. Raptor Observations: A smaller flight today with just 490 birds likely due to the straight ENE and E winds which tends to spread the flight out from the lake shore and quite a ways inland. Still, another 6 Golden Eagles cruised through bringing the total for this species so far this season to 67. A very interesting bird was initially spotted by one of the visitors (Alan M from Tennessee) and was an almost completely white raptor. Closer examination by observers showed it had a bit of black in the wingtips and on the tips of the trailing edge of the wings. Tom was able to ID it as a leucistic Red-tailed Hawk. This is only the 2nd such bird with this kind of plumage... we had the first way back in the early 2000s and that bird had a single black feather in the right wing... otherwise it was pure white. Non-raptor Observations: Tom reported a small group of 4 Sandhill Cranes flying past the hawk watch. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
