A big thanks to Tom B, Tom S, Chris B and others for spotting and recording today's birds. Weather: A pleasant day today with light NE winds that eventually backed around to SE in the early afternoon. Interestingly, the winds at higher elevations were obviously still northerly based on the movement of the higher cloud layers. Temps ranged from 14C to a high of 24C. Cloud cover was at a higher level initially before burning off and eventually replaced by some scattered cumulus which also kept dissipating. Raptor Observations: Although today's flight wasn't particularly large with 783 raptors tallied, it did prove interesting with a couple of unexpected birds... an intermediate sub-adult looking Swainson's Hawk that crossed just to the north of the viewing platform at about double tree top height. The bird provided a nice look in great light as it circled once before heading off westward. Also an early light morph Rough-legged Hawk. Good numbers of Am Kestrels (209), Broadwings (215), N Harriers (34) and Sharpies (298). Other species included Bald Eagle (1 immature that we felt was high enough to tally for the count), Cooper's Hawks (4), Osprey (5), Redtails (2), Merlins (12) and a lone Peregrine. Non-raptor Observations: For a checklist of non-raptors see the following eBird checklist... https://ebird.org/checklist/S274322536 Predictions: Winds are forecast to be moderate from the E for the day with mostly sunshine and a high of 23C so the flight may be similar to today's. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
