Observation start time: 09:00:00
Observation end time: 13:00:00
Total observation time: 4 hours

Official Counter: Hugh Kent

Observers: Juliette Herdman, Liz Kent, Noel Herdman, Paul Gosselin

Visitors:
Big thanks to Mike, Paul G and Noel and Juliette for keeping us company
this morning. The warming chicken stew brought by Noel and Juliette was
very welcome, thank you!

Weather:
A cold and overcast day with the temperature not rising above 3c. The wind
was light generally from the south and the rain arrived on cue at 1pm.

Raptor Observations:
The morning was made worthwhile by an immature American Goshawk passing the
tower at low level. The only other raptors seen were a Northern Harrier and
a Sharp-shinned Hawk, both also at relatively low level. There wasn't a lot
of incentive to fly today.

Non-raptor Observations:
The ducks were again finding the stretches of open water amongst the frozen
areas. Some were standing on the ice. A poor Great Blue Heron took a while
finding its balance on the ice. There was a big total of over 8,300 ducks
of thirteen species on the marsh today. It was nice watching a Bonaparte's
Gull delicately fishing on the trout pond. There were a few small birds,
mostly sparrows foraging in the undergrowth around the Tower, including a
good find of a Hermit Thrush. The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S155273362

Predictions:
Tomorrow's forecast is for a cold (not getting above 0c) overcast day with
a strong wind from the west. It looks as though overnight rain/snow will
have passed by early morning. Unlikely that we will see many raptors
tomorrow, let's hope I am proved wrong.
