It was good to see Meredith and Cathy on the Tower. Weather: The day was overcast with a very light wind from the south. The temperature remained around the mid teens. The ominous skies in the west bore fruit when the rain started early afternoon. Raptor Observations: Turkey Vultures (1370) ventured along the shore riding the light wind. A few Sharp-shinned Hawks (24) appeared, together with even fewer Cooper's Hawks (7). Two Northern Harriers, two American Kestrels and a Red-tailed Hawk completed the tally for today. Non-raptor Observations: There continue to be growing numbers of ducks on the Marsh, though quite widely dispersed. A total of nine species were seen including a raft of Ruddy Duck (32). Ring-necked Duck (350) numbers are slowly building. There is a lot of activity around the Tower with Blackbirds constantly chattering and Sparrows feeding off the ground and in low vegetation. Warblers made a late show with singles of Palm, Nashville, Tennessee, Bay-breasted Warblers, Common Yellowthroat and Northern Parula. There were many Yellow-rumped Warblers (18) vying with the sparrows for the best feeding areas. Blue Jay numbers (1260) exceeded 1000, but are generally on the decline from the highs of the last couple of weeks. The were a couple of nice Starling (7,190) murmurations to the north. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S152632676 Predictions: Tomorrows forecast indicates rain for most of the day, so it is unlikely we will conduct a count. Saturday's forecast indicates rain in the afternoon, so we will check out the morning. Sunday is much better with partial clouds and a moderate wind from the north west. Looking forward to better numbers on Sunday. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
