Good to see Steve again, always welcome with his camera! Weather: Nice day on the Tower. Clear skies, temperature gradually rising to low 10s and a moderate wind from the southwest. A bit hazy with slightly reduced visibility. Raptor Observations: Only a few raptors today, with Red-tailed Hawks (15) again leading the pack, followed by Cooper's Hawks (8). Four Northern Harriers including two grey ghosts and three Golden Eagles were the highlight of the day. One adult Golden Eagle flew straight over the tower at about 40 ft!! Turkey Vulture, Sharp-shinned Hawk and Red-shouldered Hawk were singles. Non-raptor Observations: Mallards (1750) still dominate duck numbers, slightly reduced from the last few days high numbers. Ducks have now spread out as the marsh has thawed out. Other nice ducks to see were Buffleheads (9), Hooded Mergansers (6) and Red-breasted Mergansers (5). It was interesting to note that Black Duck (122) numbers are up and Shoveler and Green- winged Teal seem to have left the marsh. Large flocks of gulls including Ring-billed Gull (870) are finding something to feed on in the marsh. Sandhill Cranes (4) and Great Blue Herons (27) are still present. On the smaller side, good numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds (1220) flew past. There was more sparrow activity around the tower with American Tree Sparrows (7) busily feeding on the Phragmites seeds. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S123078266 Predictions: Looks like rain all day tomorrow - may be a wash out. Let's hope the forecast is wrong and the rain clears as the wind appears to be from the northeast! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
