Weather: The weather today was great. It started out a bit cloudy but cleared up and reached about 10C. The winds were moderate and from the northwest all day. Raptor Observations: Once again the majority of the raptors were red tailed hawks, of which there were many. Red shouldered hawks were much fewer today but present. The highlights of the day were two rough legged hawks which flew right over the tower within minutes of each other, one a gorgeous dark phase and the other a light phase. Two golden eagles also flew close to the tower in the afternoon. Two grey ghost northern harriers, a Merlin, and a few sharpies and Cooperâs hawks were also riding the northwest winds. Non-raptor Observations: The warm, sunny conditions have cleared all of the ice out of the marsh and ponds, allowing the ducks to spread out. Mallards were most abundant followed by American black duck. Gulls were flying all day enjoying the wind and landing in large groups on the marsh. A long line of red breasted merganser swam by close to the shore on the lake. Most of the songbirds were quiet and hidden today, maybe due to the wind. Four sandhill cranes also flew a few laps high above the tower. https://ebird.org/checklist/S122999664 Predictions: The weather tomorrow will warm and clear, however winds will be southwest. The winds could be above 20km/h which may encourage some migrants. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Nicole Shangi ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
