It is always a pleasure. Weather: Today was slightly warmer than the weekend and last week with a high of 5C. It was very windy again from the southwest bringing a chill, but the sun was out most of the day which was very helpful. The majority of the marsh has frozen except for a few small areas. Raptor Observations: Once again there were very few raptors. We had four red-tailed hawks, two Northern harriers, a coopers hawk and a merlin. It is possible the strong winds are discouraging raptor migration. Non-raptor Observations: The waterfowl on the marsh was greatly decreased today apart from mallards, of which there were up to 700. There are very few spots of open water and the majority of the ducks were seen flying when flushed by bald eagles. There were large congregations of blue herons again today with around 60. A Wilsons snipe was flushed from the borders of the trout pond a couple times today, giving us a nice view. Songbirds are still lacking due to the wind, however a few did poke their heads out including cardinals, white throated sparrows, field sparrows, song sparrows, and golden crowned kinglets. https://ebird.org/checklist/S122792604 Predictions: Tomorrow there should be a bit of a reprieve from the high winds. The high could get up to 7C, sunny, with winds from the southwest. Hopefully the raptors take the hint to migrate! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Nicole Shangi ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
