Weather: Today was cold and very, very windy with up to 36km/h winds from the southwest. It was difficult to use a scope and binoculars. Throughout the day, ice was noticeably increasing on the marsh and ponds. Raptor Observations: There were very few raptors today with five red tailed hawks, four turkey vultures and two northern harriers. Eventually the weather conditions became a bit difficult for the lack of hawks being seen today and called it a day at 2pm. Non-raptor Observations: Like the raptors, most other birds were missing today. The waterfowl usually present on the marsh were greatly reduced, likely hiding from the wind. Songbirds were almost completely absent too. There were however a small group of hooded mergansers which landed in the trout pond, and few groups of tundra swan flying over. Also present today were large numbers of ring-billed gulls, much higher numbers than we have seen so far. https://ebird.org/checklist/S122607010 Predictions: Tomorrow looks more frigid than today with strong winds again from the southwest. It is likely to be another slow migration day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Nicole Shangi ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
