Dave and Jane again visited us in the morning and helped with raptor spotting before returning to Ottawa. Other visitors included AT and Claire from Toronto and a party of seven teachers. All took a great interest in the Hawk Watch and birds on the Marsh. Weather: A cold day with temperature at about 3c, combined with a strong wind mainly from the west, but with a slight northern component at times. It was bright initially then overcast for the rest of the day with the odd snow flurry. Raptor Observations: Good flight of raptors, with Red-tailed Hawks (104) leading the way, followed by Red-shouldered Hawks (7). Low numbers of Northern Harrier (3), Sharp-shinned Hawk (2), Cooper's Hawk (3) and Merlin (1). However we did see our first Rough-legged Hawk of the Season! And it was a dark Phase!!!. Two Golden Eagles topped off what was a good day. Non-raptor Observations: Many, many ducks again on the marsh with Mallards (720) being the most numerous. Notables were a late Blue-winged Teal and six Buffleheads. There was a small raft of Horned Grebe (9) on the lake. Nice to see more Tundra Swan flying over with a few landing in the marsh. Sandhill Cranes (2) and a late Great Egret graced us with their presence. Most small birds were seeking shelter from the strong wind, but American Goldfinches (278) were numerous and it was great to see Eastern Bluebirds (21) in the trees and flying over. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S122388356 Predictions: Tomorrow is forecast to be cold, especially first thing, with a mix of sun and cloud. The wind is likely to be light initially from the north turning south by mid-afternoon. Hopefully the north wind will bring more raptors than today, combined with the continuing cold which may encourage more Rough-legged Hawks to pass by. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
