Thank you to the few visitors and Bob, who kept me company today! Weather: Today the weather was mostly cloudy and drizzly. The wind was from the south and strong, however the tower was protected from the strong winds from the trees along the shore. Raptor Observations: Today was slow raptor wise. To the north, only a couple turkey vultures passed all day. There were turkey vultures in groups of 10-40 that passed low along the shoreline in between drizzly spells. They must have been taking advantage of the high winds along the shore; they didn't even need to kettle! There were very few sharpies, and three merlins. Three coopers hawks and one harrier passed the tower. We were severely lacking in buteos and kestrels today (annoyingly, I passed a handful of red-tails and kestrels on my drive home). Non-raptor Observations: There was plenty of activity around the tower to make up for the lack of raptors. The usual waterfowl were on the marsh today, however identification was difficult at a distance because the cloudiness made them all appear dark. A new species today was a Lincoln's sparrow, one of the five species of sparrow observed today. Two sandhill cranes flew over the marsh again today, and they didn't stay long. https://ebird.org/checklist/S120562898 Predictions: More strong, southerly winds are expected tomorrow, and a slight drop in temperature. Hopefully there will be more raptors tomorrow. The hawk tower gets nicely protected from southerly winds and non-raptor species should seek some refuge in the area around the tower. Hope to see you there! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Nicole Shangi ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
