Other visitors included Mel, Jayne and Richard from New Jersey, Derek, David and Steven and Kimberley, James and Anastasia. All showed great interest in the Hawk Watch and the birds seen from the Tower. Thanks to Jayne and Richard for staying all day. Weather: The day started with rain ending mid-morning. The remainder of the day was overcast with a WNW light to moderate wind. The temperature was in the high teens. Visibility was good Raptor Observations: We were rewarded with a good day's raptor watching, despite the late start due to rain. A late migration of Broad-winged Hawks, streaming and kettling to the north produced a total of 791. Sharp-shinned Hawks continued to stream past with a total of 166 for the day. Turkey Vultures migrated in small numbers (89) with a couple of kettles to the north, one mixing with Broad-winged Hawks. Smaller numbers of American Kestrels (14) and Northern Harriers (8) were seen, with Osprey, Bald Eagles Cooper's Hawks and Merlin in ones or twos. Non-raptor Observations: Very few songbirds today, maybe they moved south in front of the rain. The best showing was in 5 species of duck with good sighting of Pintail and American Wigeon flying into the marsh. A good number of Blue Jays (12450) were seen. Sandhill Crane were heard to the north of the marsh. Waterbird numbers continue to dwindle. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S119431377 Predictions: Slight chance of rain tomorrow, with moderate to high winds from the west. Temperature mid-teens. Hopefully Accipiters, falcons and Harriers will fly tomorrow, maybe not so many buteos. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2022 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
