Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Bad weather conditions today with temperatures starting at 3 and rising to around 5 degrees C. Mostly overcast with some periods of sun, however towards afternoon rain started to stay consistent. Very strong south-westerly winds were present throughout the whole day. Raptor Observations: Rain and south-westerly winds made this a poor day for raptor movement with all species being in single digits. Throughout the whole day there were 7 Turkey Vultures, 3 Harriers, 3 Sharpies, 2 Cooper's, 5 Red Tails, 1 Merlin, and 1 Peregrine. The highlight of the day was an adult Northern Goshawk braving the winds. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptor day was extremely slow as well with reduced species diversity in all areas and especially for songbirds likely due to the winds. Migrating bird movement was also low with no American Crow movement and less than 100 Blackbirds observed moving. Marsh numbers were slightly lower today but this was likely due to ducks finding shelter in unobservable areas. https://ebird.org/checklist/S97540137 Predictions: Conditions tomorrow are expected to worsen with remaining strong south-westerly winds in conjunction with the season's lowest temperatures so far (a high of 3 degrees C) and consistent snow/freezing rain throughout the day. Raptor movement is therefore unlikely tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
