Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement. Weather: Today was quite mild with temperatures starting at around 10 and increasing to 14. Day was primarily partly cloudy with good visibility, however heavy cloud cover appeared in the afternoon, eventually leading to rain. Winds were south-easterly throughout the whole day, discouraging raptor movement. Raptor Observations: Low raptor turnout due to south-easterly winds with only 42 Turkey Vultures and single digits of Cooper's, Sharpies, and Harriers. Slower day as well for buteos with only 6 Red Shoulders and 44 Red Tails. Several falcons made an appearance today with 1 American Kestrel and 2 Peregrine Falcons. Non-raptor Observations: Continuing diversity for non-raptors, with high species counts in the marsh and stable low song bird counts. Marsh numbers are somewhat lower than season peaks but still high. American Crow movement was low with only 40 seen. A collection of nice surprises occurred today, with the arrival and departure of our first Tundra Swans, a fly by of Sandhill Cranes, and a Common Goldeneye sighting. https://ebird.org/checklist/S97447150 Predictions: Tomorrow it is expected to be slightly cooler with a low of 7 and a high of 11 degrees C during observation hours. Conditions are expected to be partly cloudy with good visibility. However winds are expected to be a strong south-westerly throughout the day, potentially impacting raptor movement. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
