Weather: The day was overcast with a strong wind from the west. Visibility was good. Temperatures remained at about 5c in the morning but rose to about 8c in the afternoon Raptor Observations: Turkey Vultures (301) and Red-tailed Hawks (101) were the main species today, passing mostly from midday onwards. Notables were an active adult Peregrine and two Golden Eagles close together at 12.04 and 12.15. Sharp-shinned Hawks were low at 12 and Bald Eagles, Red-shouldered Hawks and Cooper's Hawk were in single figures. Non-raptor Observations: Today saw good movements of American Robin (420) and Cedar Waxwing (640). Tree Swallows (534) were again hawking over the marsh. Blackbird numbers were lower but still significant. There was a significant movement of Herring Gull (292) and Bonaparte's Gull (18) was again seen on the marsh. Large numbers of Starling (7080) were seen in murmurations and groups above raptors, helping us to spot them. Duck numbers remain stable, with 11 species seen. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S97050887 Predictions: The wind is west north west tomorrow and combined with clearer skies should bring greater numbers of buteos and Turkey Vultures. It starts cold but is forecast to reach 8c, so wrap up well! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 Count data submitted via Dunkadoo - Project info at: https://dunkadoo.org/explore/hbmo/hbmo-hawk-watch-fall-2021 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
