Weather: Pretty much solid cloud cover till the last couple of hours of the count when it broke out to sun and cloud. Temps ranged from 8C to a high of just 12C today with light to moderate W winds all day. There was drizzle in the 2nd and 3rd hours which definitely impacted the migration especially for any of the soaring buteos since there was obviously little production of thermals in the area. Raptor Observations: With a westerly wind and drizzle to start in the morning there were few raptors that decided to waste the energy to move today (or so it would appear) and the total birds tallied for the day was 51. However, the counters did manage to spot 4 Golden Eagles headed westbound. The rest of the count was mostly TVs with a smattering of other species. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptors included: Herring Gull, Common Loon, Canada Goose, Great Blue Heron, American Crow, Blue Jay, European Starling, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Cedar Waxwing, Red-winged Blackbird, Rusty Blackbird, Carolina Wren, American Robin, Hermit Thrush, Eastern Bluebird, American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, Eastern Towhee, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Fox Sparrow, and Blue-headed Vireo. Predictions: More westerly winds for Monday though with more sunshine expected so perhaps a better flight than today though I suspect not a large one. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
