A birder and I and a friend sighted a least bittern walking slowly through vegetation in Colonel Sam Smith Park (Humber College, Lakeshore campus) in Toronto on Monday, October 11 in the afternoon. The body was hidden by the vegetation but we clearly saw the long yellow beak that he pointed straight upward whenever he stopped on his semi- hidden walk.
He was spotted off the path that is above the little bay where Great blue herons feed. The path leads down to the small bay viewing area. The bittern eventually headed towards the lower level and the pool/bay inlet but we didn’t find him there.
