Weather: The temp was steady at 19C. The sky was full overcast to start and cleared to about 70% coverage by the end. Wind strength was stable (about 10 km/h), starting E with occasional NE gusts, and then veering to SE, which clamped shut what trickle of raptors there were. Raptor Observations: Only 13 birds spread across the 3 hours, but that included a close Osprey and a close Peregrine that floated near the knoll until decided to catch the tailwind and jet-pack out of there. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptors included: Canada Goose, Mallard, Ring-billed Gull, American Crow, Blue Jay, American Goldfinch, Northern Cardinal, Purple Finch, American Robin, Hermit Thrush, Eastern Bluebird, European Starling, Common Grackle, Mourning Dove, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Downy Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, Northern Flicker, Black-capped Chickadee, Eastern Towhee, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and Northern Parula. Predictions: Unfortunately, we here in Southern Ontario are currently dealing with a stalled and stagnant airmass which is bringing constant southerly winds for at least the next 8-10 days. These winds will push most of any flight (if the birds even bother to move in these conditions) well inland from the hawk watch site. We could be looking out as far as Oct 18th or 19th before the more seasonal weather patterns reestablish themselves. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
