Weather: Temps ranged from 12C to 22C. The wind was a modest northerly 10 to 15 km/h with infrequent gusts to 30 km/h or so, shifting to NW near the end of the count period. There was ZERO cloud cover throughout the day, which likely kept a number of birds cloaked in blueness. Raptor Observations: Nevertheless, a respectable 164 raptors were tallied, including Broad-winged Hawks. Minus one kettle of 20, most of the latter came in tiny groups of 2-4 (espressos?), often at pleasingly low heights as they recovered from being pushed against the lake. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptors included: Canada Goose, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, American Crow, Blue Jay, American Goldfinch, European Starling, Northern Flicker, Cedar Waxwing, Mourning Dove, Song Sparrow, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Indigo Bunting, Killdeer, Rock Pigeon, Barn Swallow, Chimney Swift, Black-throated Green Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Magnolia Warbler, Belted Kingfisher, Carolina Wren, House Wren, Black-capped Chickadee, Gray Catbird, Red-winged Blackbird, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Common Yellowthroat, Common Nighthawk, and Least Sandpiper. Predictions: Very light NE winds for the day means birds may not be pushed as hard down to the lake shore but given the nice weather I suspect there will be some moving through the hawk watch site. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
