Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement Weather: Clear day with great visibility and low cloud cover. North westernly Wind was consistently low. Temperature stayed within mid 20s celsius. Raptor Observations: A moderately large of Broad-winged hawks (61) were observed migrating towards mid day, however other migration in buteos and accipiters remained low. Northern Harriers(7) made consistent appearances throughout the day. Significantly less American Kestrels were observed compared to yesterday possibly due to a shift in their flight pathways that now favoured the less open lake side treeline. Non-raptor Observations: Significant amounts of Cedar Waxwings (208) were recorded, mostly flying over. Large amounts of Mallards, Double Crested Cormorants, and Canada Geese were observed as well. A diverse array of warblers was also present with Yellow-Rumped, Yellow, Bay-Breasted, Blackburnian, Northern Parula, Nashville, and a Northern Waterthrush. https://ebird.org/checklist/S94089486 Predictions: Tomorrow, winds are expected to transition from North Easterly to Easterly, making observation of migrating raptors somewhat less favourable than the preferred Northerly Winds, Clear skies remain with a similar temperature to today's. Overall a slight drop off in Broad Winged hawk observations is expected, however falcons and accipiters will not be as readily impacted. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jacob Stasso ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
