Weather: Winds were supposed to be strong from the SW but when counters arrived there was little wind at all and this definitely had a negative affect on today's flight. Instead, winds were light from the S then swung around becoming a bit stronger BUT from the WSW which has too much of the westerly component to it which slows the migration. Temp hit a high of 28C but it felt even warmer because of the high humidity. Not exactly typical October weather! Not much cloud cover to start then building in by the end of the count period. Raptor Observations: The hope had been with the forecast strong SW winds that there would be a good Peregrine flight today but it was not to be with just 2 Peregrines cruising through. Total raptors for today was just 66. Non-raptor Observations: For non-raptors the highlights were a a great looking male Ring-necked Pheasant that was spotted right near the hawk watch and a noisy Pileated Woodpecker that flew across the field in front of the hawk watch over to the nearby bush lot. The Blue Jays were again on the move in good numbers with a count of 2,940. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
