Experienced birders are needed to survey Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes in Ontario. The BBS is the primary source of long-term, large-scale population data for breeding bird species in North America. Volunteers must be confident at birding by ear, have a reliable vehicle, and be able to survey their assigned route once a year for several years. Each survey consists of 50 3-minute point counts starting at sunrise and must be done on one day between 28 May and 7 July.
Volunteers are especially needed to fill gaps in coverage in northern Ontario. Two BBS routes are available in eastern Ontario near Smiths Falls and Cornwall. A map showing available routes in Ontario is available at: https://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/RouteMap/Map.cfm#<https://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/RouteMap/Map.cfm> Detailed information on the BBS program can be found on the Canadian BBS website http://ec.gc.ca/reom-mbs/default.asp?lang=en&n=416B57CA For more information, please contact Liz Purves, Ontario BBS Coordinator, Bird Studies Canada, at lpur...@birdscanada.org<mailto:lpur...@birdscanada.org>.
