Hi again everyone,
Just a quick update on today’s sighting. The bird was first seen about 11:45 by
Joanne and Margo Does at the start of the Marsh Trail. It was low on a branch
above the “pond” on the right side of the trail. This is exactly where it
roosted throughout September and October/November when it was refound. They
reported it to the Visitor Center and I was alerted about the sighting. I
relocated the bird about 20m from there about 12:40. It called about 15 times,
then dropped down and caught something that may have been a large leech. I’ll
check photos at home. I was able to get about 10 photos. There was another
couple present who got brief looks at it too. It ate its lunch, called a couple
more times, then flew east towards Rondeau Rd. It hasn’t been seen since,
despite at least 15 people looking. It’s currently sunny and 15 degrees, spring
peepers are calling and there are many eastern commas in the area. If it’s
refound today, I will post. A few of us will be looking all week but it
obviously knows how to hide. We’ve been checking this area carefully since it
was last seen in November.
Good luck if you try for this amazing winter bird.
Steve
