Thank you for everyone's help on this busy day at the tower! Weather: Mostly moderate and mostly northwest winds persisted throughout the day. The temperature began at 7.1 C and climbed to 11.8 C in the final hour. Cloud cover was variable; 50% to begin the day, followed by clear skies for an hour or two, then increased to about 80% for the rest of the day. Humidity generally decreased and barometric pressure increased as the day went on. Visibility was about 8 km. Raptor Observations: With the northwest winds that came this morning, it was like a faucet was turned on and all the migrants were coming through. (3) Golden Eagles, an immature, an adult and a sub-adult were observed today. A white morph Rough-legged Hawk, the first record of the season was observed. It was the biggest day so far this year for (188) Red-tailed and (42) Red-shouldered Hawks. Many (352) Sharp-shinned Hawks were still being observed. 2 Peregrine Falcon flew past in the morning. A good number of (26) Bald Eagles and also some (15) Northern Harrier including at least 4 males. A Merlin and some (12) American Kestrel were also observed. The local Osprey is still present. Non-raptor Observations: 4 Wild Turkey were observed around the campsite on the drive in in the morning. Many Red-winged Blackbirds were migrating past tower in the morning. Many American Goldfinches, Cedar Waxwings and Pine Siskin were observed flying past later in the day. American Crow numbers drastically increased today making this the biggest day for this species so far this year. Blue Jays - 2,330 American Crow - 2880 Monarchs - 1 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49407060 Predictions: Winds are forecast to continue from the northwest throughout the night and into mid-morning. They are then expected to shift to the north for the rest of the day. It will be mainly sunny skies and a high of 9 C.
