Late this afternoon, a single adult Ross's Goose was ensconced with a flock of roughly 150 Canada Geese in the southwest section of the Woolwich Reservoir. The Canadas appeared to be a mix of local and migrant birds. There were thousands of gulls on the lake as well, virtually all Ring-billed. Also a few ducks, including one Ruddy, some Ring-necks and quite a few teal, mainly Green-winged. Only one shorebird was noted: a single Greater Yellowlegs, but the extensive mudflats of the northeast arm were not checked.
Directions: The Woolwich Reservoir is a Conservation Authority property a couple of kilometres north of Elmira. Follow Arthur St north through the town and turn left (west) on Reid Woods Dr. The main gates are at one km, on the right. There is a good trail all the way around the lake, and there are various other access points. Although not marked, the easiest of these is in Floradale, immediately north of the prominent feed mill. Park at the back of the church parking lot and walk a short distance northeast to catch the trail. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
