Weather: The day began with light winds from the east northeast but soon switched to the east, with 100% cloud cover and a temperature of 15.6 C. Around 9:00 am EST the winds switched again to a southeasterly direction and remained so throughout the day. Temperatures quickly rose to a high of 24 C. Visibility was relatively good at about 9 km but decreased slightly throughout the day as a haze developed on the horizon. Raptor Observations: It was another slow day for raptor migration. 1 Northern Harrier was seen, 2 Osprey, some Turkey Vultures and Sharp-shinned Hawks but not nearly as many as usual, an American Kestrel, a Merlin, and 3 Peregrine Falcons including a first year bird that was caught and banded. A local Red-tailed Hawk was seen at different times throughout the day, as well as 3 Bald Eagles, 2 adults and an immature bird. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay numbers picked up today compared to the last few days however most of the activity was in the morning. Other species were coming through in the morning too, including some flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds. European Starlings were seen in great numbers for the second day in a row. Only a few Chimney Swift were seen today but still lots of Tree Swallows. Not many warblers were seen again today and generally there was not as much activity as usual around the tower. Blue Jays - 23 163 Monarchs - 27 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48914606 Predictions: The winds are expected to continue from the south this evening and overnight with a risk of thunderstorms in the early morning. However, by 8:00 am EST the rain should stop and winds are expected to shift to the northwest. By approximately 11:00 am EST the winds are expected from the north and will continue throughout the day with a mix of sun and cloud. Hopefully raptor migration will pick up nicely, with us finally getting some northern winds! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Craig Evans ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
