Weather: The temperature remained at around 15 C all day with 100% cloud cover. The day began with moderate winds from the northeast and dark skies to the north. Based on the weather radar there was a line of showers just to the north of our location. Around 9:00 am EST the winds switched to the north and remained so for the rest of the day with wind gusts of up to 16 mph at times. Visibility began to increase in the afternoon and it seemed like things were trying to clear up, although they never really did. Raptor Observations: The showers to the north seemed to be blocking migration for the most part in the morning as things were very slow. Some Sharp-shined Hawks were seen but not nearly in the numbers as usual and also 2 Northern Harriers. Around 12:00 pm EST things began to pick up with some ketteling Turkey Vultures and a few Broad-winged Hawks mixed in. For the next 4 hours, numbers and diversity began to increase. An immature Red-shouldered Hawk was seen as well as a few Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, Coopers Hawks, Kestrels, a Merlin, and more TV's, Broad-wings and Sharpies. Seemed to slow again around 3:30 pm EST. Non-raptor Observations: A very slow day for Blue Jays and only saw 1 Monarch today. Warblers and other passerines seemed to be around the base of the tower in decent numbers in the morning. A Blue-headed Vireo was seen today. It seemed like there were more White-throated Sparrows around today. More ducks are beginning to appear from the north including Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, and Gadwall. Blue Jays - 2 408 Monarchs - 1 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48872825 Predictions: Showers and thunderstorms and expected all night tonight and through the day tomorrow, although the possibility of percentage decreases throughout the day. Winds are expected from the southwest tonight and tomorrow morning and switching to western winds around 12:00pm EST with temperatures around 20 C. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Craig Evans ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
