Thank you for all your help! Weather: The morning began cool at around 10 C for the first 3 hours with moderate winds from the northeast. There was 100% cloud cover and off and on light rain. At 10:00 am EST the wind began to decrease, switched to the southeast and temperatures quickly rose. Temperatures reached a high of 25 C at 12:00 pm EST still with 100% cloud cover, light south winds, and 76% humidity. Raptor Observations: A good number of of Sharp-shinned Hawks came through with the NE winds, often behind a trail of Blue Jays. 3 Different species of falcon were seen in the first hour. As the temperatures rose, many Turkey vultures began to kettle along with some Broad-winged Hawks. The Sharpies continued coming through as well but everything slowed down significantly in the afternoon. A few Cooper's Hawks, Osprey, Red-tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle, and Northern Harriers were also seen today. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays were arriving in great numbers today with over 30 000 seen in the first 3 hours. They soon started to slow as the winds shifted. Many Tree Swallows could be seen in the distance and Ring-billed Gulls dominated the skies in the afternoon. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak was seen. Lots of Wilson's and Yellow-Rumped Warblers were also seen today by those who were present. Blue Jays - 38 100 Monarchs - 52 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48848232 Predictions: A 60% chance of rain is forecast for tomorrow morning with cool temperatures and winds again from the northeast. Things should clear by late afternoon and winds will switch to an easterly direction. Hopefully the northeast winds and some sun in the afternoon will produce some good conditions for migrating raptors. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Craig Evens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
