The 47th Port Hope-Cobourg Christmas Bird Count was held on December 16, 2017. A total of 38 field observers and 5 feeder watchers tallied 20,357 birds of 82 species. The weather in general was good, with light winds and a high of -5°C. There was about 20 cm of fresh snow that had fallen the previous evening. Few species were recorded in record high numbers. These were Mute Swan (23), Tundra Swan (6), Canada Goose (6449), Merlin (5), and Snowy Owl (5). Species found in lower than normal numbers were Bufflehead (56), Ruffed Grouse (3), Ring-billed Gull (95), Herring Gull (83), Black-capped Chickadee (776), Cedar Waxwing (22) and American Goldfinch (213). Other highlights included: Trumpeter Swan (1) Green-winged Teal (1) Turkey Vulture (1) Red-shouldered Hawk (1) Gray Catbird (1) Brown Thrasher (1) Eastern Towhee (count week) Chipping Sparrow (1) Field Sparrow (1) Savannah Sparrow (1) Fox Sparrow (1) White-crowned Sparrow (1) Oregon Junco (1) Winter finches were almost non-existent, with only a single Pine Siskin reported.
