Visitors:
Lots of visitors today and I'm not going to try and list them all
here...and a big thankyou to the crew that helped with spotting the birds
and getting the count done today.
Weather:
A near perfect hawk watching day weather wise with moderate to strong NW
and N winds for the entire day and some good cloud cover to help spot the
birds! Temp was not bad getting to a high of 9C.
Raptor Observations:
A fantastic flight with quality over quantity...with a total of 1,566 birds
of 13 different species.
The highlights for today had to be the GOLDEN EAGLES (43)... clearly one of
the best flights of this species that we've had at Hawk Cliff (though not
our highest daily count). Other highlights included a few Northern Goshawks
(3) one which crossed low and right over the observers, along with a good
number of Roughies (21). The count also included decent numbers of
Red-shoulders (48) and Redtails (276) and even a couple of very late
Broadwings!
Non-raptor Observations:
Some non-raptors reported today with Fox Sparrow, a single Sandhill Crane
flyby, Tundra Swans (13) and believe it or not a couple of Monarchs and a
Painted Lady.
Predictions:
The weekend is looking to be a washout BUT keep an eye on Monday and
Tuesday as winds are predicted to be moderate to strong once again from the
NW and NE and there's still (I think) a good number of Red-shoulders and
Redtails to come and most likely another flight of Golden Eagles!
