Total observation time: 7 hours
Official Counter: Bob Johnstone
Observers: Chris Burris, Eric Single, Mary Carnahan, Mike Cowlard,
Ronnie Goodhand
Visitors:
Thanks to everyone that was at the site today to help spotting and tallying
the raptors...Bob, Chris, Eric, Ronnie, Mike and Mary....along with Nancy D
who was a visitor.
Weather:
Still way too hot to start the day today and unfortunately, the winds were
a bit too much from the westerly component being WNW and moderate most of
the day. Some cloud early that burned off but then built back in fairly
heavily by the end of the count period.
Raptor Observations:
Only 147 birds were observed migrating through today though it was good to
see 3 Peregrines, especially as we approach their prime time frame for
migration. Other species included N. Harriers (3), Sharpies (45), a few
more Broadwings (8), a good number of Am. Kestrels (86) and a couple of
Merlins.
Non-raptor Observations:
Some of the non-raptors reported today included... Downy and Pileated
Woodpeckers, YB Sapsucker, DC Cormorants, N. Flicker, Am. Robin, Gray
Catbird, House and Winter Wren, Red-eyed and Blue-headed Viroes, BT Blue
and Magnolia Warbler, Tufted Titmouse, Song Sparrow, E. Towhee, RT
Hummingbirds, Barn Swallow, Swainson's Thrush, Killdeer and Caspian Tern.
Monarch count: 203
Blue Jay count: 1070
Predictions:
Thursday could be really interesting with predicted moderate NW winds for
the day... and given the very small numbers of Broadwings tallied this fall
at Hawk Cliff, Holiday Beach and Detroit River watches there may yet be a a
big push to come.
