Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email or post records directly to me - contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise.
Highlights: There can be no doubt that spring has arrived, and with that an influx of the regular early migrants. Lots of birders are out too bagging 'first of year' sightings but nothing too dramatic has been sighted in the region. Here are the highlights of the past 2 weeks: GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE - a single bird was present on 1st along Nugent Road, Napanee Plains IBA. BLACK SCOTER - 6 birds were seen at Prince Edward Point on 9th. GOLDEN EAGLE - an adult bird was seen near Bedford on 3rd. NORTHERN GOSHAWK - birds were seen on Wolfe Island on 2nd and near Crosby on 9th. SANDHILL CRANE - birds were noted at Crosby, Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre and Camden Lake. PEREGRINE FALCON - the downtown pair have been seen on and off in the vicinity of Princess and Division throughout the period. LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE - birds are back on their breeding grounds at Napanee Plain IBA with 1-2 being seen throughout the period. TUFTED TITMOUSE - a single bird was banded at Prince Edward Point on 13th. CAROLINA WREN - The Ravensview bird, just east of Kingston, was seen on 5th. NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD - the long-staying Kingston bird continues but others have been seen this week in Reddendale (Kingston) on 12th, Marysville (Wolfe Island) on 8th and Big Sandy Bay (Wolfe Island) on 13th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, a big thank you goes to all who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
