Highlights: It was very spring-like earlier in the week with blackbirds, grackles and a scattering of cowbirds across the region but the last couple of days has seen a return of cold weather and northerly winds. No 'rarities' this week but certainly a taster of things to come. Here are the highlights of the last week: SNOW GOOSE - Four birds were seen at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, Kingston on 25th, 1 near Lansdowne on 1st, and 1 on Howe Island on 2nd. WOOD DUCK - Two birds were noted at the recently unfrozen Kaiser Cross Road, Prince Edward County on 25th. Another was seen at Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on 28th, and 16 were already at Lansdowne on 1st. NORTHERN SHOVELER - Two males were present at Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on 26th. GREEN-WINGED TEAL - the first birds (3) of the season were seen at Kaiser Cross Road on 27th, with 2 near Lansdowne on 28th and 7 there on 1st. TURKEY VULTURE - Singles were noted on Wolfe Island on 27th, and Kingston on 1st. KILLDEER - Records of 1-3 birds were received on 25th from 5 separate locations. Further birds were noted through to 28th, but none since. AMERICAN WOODCOCK - our first local bird was noted in Amherstview on 26th. On 1st, 6 were present at a single location on 7th Line, Wolfe Island as well as lesser numbers elsewhere. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD and COMMON GRACKLE are both now widespread, with the latter still tripping local eBird filters due to their early arrival. RUSTY BLACKBIRD - 5 early birds were heard and seen at Elginburg on 25th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, a big thank you goes to all who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
