Happy Holidays, everyone!
We have an immature female Indigo Bunting inconsistently coming to our feeder. It showed up Dec 23 and 24 and then once on the 25th. It wasn't seen at all yesterday but was back briefly just now (the 27th). We're sorry we couldn't report this until now but our crazy Christmas schedule prevented it. Here is a link to my flickr site to see some photos of the bunting: https://www.flickr.com/photos/127945801@N07/ If anyone wants to try to see this bird (described by my wife as "Really? I've never seen a drabber bird in my life...why couldn't you have a nice male one?"), you are welcome to go into our garage (directions below) to look out the back garage window at the feeder. This is really the only spot to watch it without entering our backyard. Here are a few requests (sorry, but we want this to be a positive experience for everyone). Please come anytime between 9 am and 3 pm. Please do not open back garage door or enter the backyard as it scares the birds and our dog. The window is viewer friendly but doesn't open so not very photographer friendly - sorry. Please park on the road and walk up the driveway - it is slightly sloped so if it is icy out it is very slippery - be careful! Be considerate of our neighbours' privacy! They already know I am the nutty neighbourhood naturalist... Our house is at 245 Christie St. in Rockwood. From the 401 take Guelph Line north. Follow until you get to Hwy 7 and turn right into Rockwood (the Rockwood Conservation Area will be on your right - a nice place to visit while you are here). At the next lights, turn left onto Main St. Go over the train tracks and turn right onto the second street which is Christie. Follow all the way until you get to the end where you will make a sharp left bend. At the next sharp left bend you will be at our house - look for the eight wooden cardinals. :) Cheers and happy new year, Chris and Nathan Earley Chris Earley, BSc (Zoology), MSc (Environmental Biology) Interpretive Biologist and Education Coordinator The Arboretum University of Guelph Guelph, Ontario, Canada N1G 2W1 519-824-4120 ext 52201 [email protected] www.uoguelph.ca/arboretum<http://www.uoguelph.ca/arboretum> https://www.flickr.com/photos/52649814@N05/ "The chief aim of interpretation is not instruction, but provocation" - Freeman Tilden _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
