Weather: Fog and drizzle greeted us when we arrived to the count site today, so we were forced to delay the start time by about an hour. After we started, the sky was grey until a blue notch in the clouds drifted overhead at the end of the day. Barometric pressure increased as the day progressed, and wind steadily came from the northwest. Raptor Observations: Due to bad weather at the count site, and to the east, we had relatively few raptors fly over today. A few small streams of TVs glided overhead, offering us nice looks. Ten Sharpies flew over from 9 to 1, though none after 1, which seemed rather strange. Because of their rarity today, the five Buteos that we spotted seemed extra special. Our gaze lingered each time we got a look at one of these birds, to avoid returning to a sky mostly empty of raptors. We enjoyed watching an Osprey dive-bomb a Bald Eagle, and later gulls chasing that eagle and its fish. Non-raptor Observations: While waiting for the fog to lift, just down the trail from the count site, a mink was spotted due to the alarm call notes that a White-throated Sparrow was uttering above it. Many Tree Swallows were flying overhead today, though only eight American Crows were spotted. Predictions: Tomorrow is predicted to be mostly sunny, with a light wind. We are hopeful that birds which delayed their flight today will migrate tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
