Ross Harris and I spent 3 hours here today under very windy conditions but did find a fair assortment of shorebirds in southern cell which is mostly flooded with shallow water from two days of rain. Here are the totals, including 5 species of shorebirds: Canada Goose: 150 (fly overs) Trumpeter Swan: 21 total = 16 adults + 5 young Gadwall: ~10 American Wigeon: ~40 American Black Duck: 1 Mallard: ~25 Northern Shoveler: ~5 Northern Pintail: ~5 Green-winged Teal: ~50 Ring-necked Duck: 1 adult male Lesser Scaup: ~25-30 Bufflehead: ~150 Ruddy Duck: 2 Greater Yellowlegs: 6 (photos taken) Pectoral Sandpiper: ~12 (photos taken) Dunlin: 4 (photos taken) Dowitcher sp: 2 (we did not get photos but from the field marks: very long bills; grey breasts and dull overall we were fairly sure they juvenile Long-billed Dowitchers which had been seen in last flew according to Rayfield Pye who we saw at the Cranberry Marsh Hawk watch this morning.) Wilson’s Snipe: 1 Bonaparte’s Gull: ~80 Ring-billed Gull: ~20 (all fly-overs) Blue Jay: ~3 American Crow: ~6 American Robin: ~15 European Starling: ~50 American Tree Sparrow: 3 Song Sparrow: 1 White-crowned Sparrow: 2 Dark-eyed Junco: ~5 American Goldfinch: 2
