Weather: The cloud cover was ~100% all day, and the wind always had an easterly component. The rain began to fall sporadically just after noon, and then more steadily by 1. Raptor Observations: We spotted a few sizable kettles of Turkey Vultures, which may be an indication that when the weather clears this species will start moving in large numbers. Aside from the 29 Sharp-shinned Hawks that we spotted, the other six species that were detected all had three or less individuals counted. Once this persistent low pressure system moves through, maybe more individuals of these species will be migrating. Non-raptor Observations: 'Rivers' of Blue Jays (11,750+) were moving through in very large groups, and added a bit of blue to the gray skies, with dense lines that sometimes extended for more than a half mile in length. Our two domestic duck friends spotted an eagle flying over before we did, cocking their heads to keep one eye on a possible threat. We also saw a Great Blue Heron with a large fish it could not figure out how to swallow! Predictions: Rain is also predicted for tomorrow, though we should at least have some Sharp-shinned Hawks moving through. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
