Weather: For most of the day the light wind was coming from the southeast. Cloud cover was variable throughout the day, ranging from 15 percent to 60 percent. Temperatures reached the 80s, but didn't budge us counters. Raptor Observations: Today was a relatively slow day, with Sharp-shinned Hawks steadily coming through from 9 to 1 to keep us company. Several kestrels and harriers passed through, as well as a Merlin and Peregrine Falcon. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays were the bird of the day, with 5,057 tallied (almost all of these before noon), and probably at least another 1,000 that were not counted. These intelligent birds are often disliked because of their bossy reputation, but are fascinating to observe due to their intelligence and vocal capability. Only 29 monarch butterflies were tallied today, as well as 120 Red-winged Blackbirds. We also saw an unfortunate water snake which will now have to try to survive with a hook in its mouth, and line hanging out. Fisherpeople out there, please remember to do your best to leave as little of your fishing supplies in nature as possible! Predictions: Though rain is possible tomorrow, which could impede movement, the winds are predicted to have a northerly component which could push migrating birds over the count site. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
